5 reasons why the Fall is the perfect time for Estate Planning!
For those of you who have been thinking about getting your Will(s) and Powers of Attorney done, but have been putting it off for months or even years in some cases… you know who you are ;), here are some of the top reasons why Fall is the perfect time to get your affairs in order:
The back-to-school rush is over! August is a busy month. Everyone is trying to get organized for back-to-school all while trying to squeeze out the last bit of pool and BBQ time. If you’re at all like me - you still want to live summer to the fullest until the leaves fall! Now that the hot summer days are behind us and the kids are back in school, it’s time to gather and organize all of your financial and legal documents. It’s time to get things in order!
Autumn joys are upon us! I get it - it’s difficult to sit down and talk about who will inherit your property and at what age when it’s 30 degrees outside! This is why Autumn is the time! The air is crisp, it’s the season to find contentment at home. A cozy sweater, a hot apple cider and the fireplace - it’s the perfect time to sit down and focus on getting your family some financial certainty and security with a completed and up to date estate plan.
Thanksgiving is a time for family! Thanksgiving, a time for togetherness, is the perfect opportunity to talk to family and friends about your estate plan. Topics such as who will be your executor and who will take care of your children should be discussed with family members (especially those who you would like to name in your Will as executor(s) or guardian(s) for your children) so that the people you love and trust the most know what to do in the event of the unspeakable happening!
Beat the Holiday rush! The Holidays can be an overwhelming time for estate planning, yet a lot of people insist on completing their Will(s) and Powers of Attorney before January 1. Perhaps it was a new year resolution, who knows! If you take the time to plan your estate in the Fall, you can avoid feeling rushed to get it done before the end of the year or avoid the feeling of not having accomplished this important process - yet again - before year end!
November is Make a Will month! The Ontario Bar Association (OBA) has declared November “Make a Will Month”. During this month, many Ontario lawyers will volunteer by offering free legal information sessions at libraries and local hubs to help the public understand the importance of having a will and having it done by a lawyer. It’s the perfect opportunity to gather with your community and obtain answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Wills!
Remember, no one loves your family like you do. Protect your loved ones and your property by making sure your wishes will be followed in your estate plan. Engage a competent legal professional to help you!
HAPPY FALL & HAPPY PLANNING!
